For this project I had to design something for a character I got assigned. This character is an old fish farmer, who hates fish and loves cats.

I had to do an interview to find out all of her problems, her wants, and her needs. The main goal was to dive deep into someone's problems and to find a fitting solution for them, and then design something around that.

A few questions for Hilda

How are you planning to travel the world?
“I bought a food truck. I’m going to use that to drive all around the world and see places while still honoring my late husband.”

Why do you hate fish so much?
“They’re just gross. They feel so slippery, look ugly and the smell is the worst thing of all. It’s disgusting.”

Why not fully move on from being a fish farmer?
“I’m doing this for my husband. Before he died I promised him I would continue his business, and even though I hate it, I can’t just give it up.”

made a few concepts to show Hilda the options I had for her. With these concepts I thought about her struggles with fish, hating people and carrying her cat around. I tried to make it personalised but still really useful.

After I showed Hilda the concepts, she decided she liked the Capelet idea the most. She said it was the most useful to her and that she would love to see how it turns out. When I heard this from her, I immediately started designing.

Recommendations
Hilda had a few things she would like to change about the wearable. She loved the overall look, but also made a small list of tweaks she would like to see in the end result.

1. A darker overall color
2. Soft fabric
3. Move the box with the UI up so it doesn't feel as heavy
4. Make the hood a little big bigger
5. Pockets on the inside for necessities

For this project, I also had to make a bio for my own character. I was told to make someone based on the steampunk aesthetic, which I was really excited about. I went all in to make sure the person making something for me would have as much fun designing a wearable, as I did designing the character.

Reflecting
This project must have been my favorite so far. I got to design my own character, which I love doing, and I also got to design something for someone else. Working together with Hilda was super fun and I learned a lot from it. There are some things that I'd definitely do better next time, like starting on my prototype earlier, but overall I'm really proud of how everything turned out, and I would love to do something like this again in the future.
